Mount Zion Church
Aldie, VA

Size:

1,650 SF; congregation size of 400

Working closely with the Mount Zion Church Preservation Association (affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution) and the Loudoun County Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services, Samaha Associates designed a complete restoration of this circa-1851 countryside church. The red brick, federal-style structure was used as a barracks, hospital, prison, and burial ground during the Civil War. Challenges included major structural repairs; roof replacement; and restoration of the doors, windows, and historic plaster. The church is now a stop along the noted “Journey through Hallowed Ground” byway and is used for community functions, tours, and historic battle reenactments.
