Gaithersburg High School
Gaithersburg, MD

Size:

374,670 SF

Phased construction of the school on the existing 40.8 acre site replaced the original facility built in 1951. Samaha designed the school’s 2006 addition, which provided sixteen classrooms, an art suite, a music suite and an information technology center. This addition helped alleviate the growing student population throughout the design of the replacement facility and set the theme for the final design.

The new high school accommodates 2,200 students with a core capacity of 2,400 students. These students have access to a broad curriculum that includes landscaping and horticulture, cosmetology, automotive foundation, and hospitality management. In addition, amenities are provided in the new site plan, which includes new practice fields, game fields, and a stadium. The school’s 2006 addition and existing 1,200 seat auditorium are incorporated into the design of the replacement school. Sustainable features include a green roofing system, extensive use of local and recycled materials, and a geothermal HVAC system.
